Tonya Charland

CVA welcomes Tonya Charland as the head coach for our 15 National Team.  Tonya
most recently spent six years in Division I volleyball at the helm of the Birmingham-
Southern College volleyball program. The Olympia, Wash., native and former
All-Conference performer at UAB laid a foundation for success over six seasons on
the Hilltop, leading her Panthers to top-four finishes in the Big South Conference
standings and the semifinals of the conference tournament.

In the Charland era, BSC recorded victories over in-state rivals South Alabama, Jacksonville State,
Troy and Samford, and Big South powers Radford, Liberty, UNC Asheville, High Point, and Coastal
Carolina. The Panthers also notched impressive out-of-league victories over Memphis from
Conference USA and N.C. State from the ACC. More importantly than the names and numbers,
however, was the renewed excitement Charland brought to a young volleyball program that was
teetering on the doubt of being competitive at the NCAA Division I level.  The reason: Charland is a
master of preparation.

The success Birmingham-Southern experienced under her leadership was not new to Charland,
formerly Tonya Larson and a three-time All-Conference USA performer at UAB from 1995-97.  Charland
was the runner-up for the Fred Sington Award given to the top female amateur athlete in Alabama and
was UAB's NCAA Female Athlete of the Year in 1997. She was named to the Great Midwest
All-Newcomer team as a freshman before the creation of C-USA.

As a coach, Charland spent three seasons with her alma mater where her responsibilities included
on-court instruction in both matches and practice and academic progress monitoring. She also served
as UAB's recruiting coordinator. She was named head coach at BSC in January of 2001. Her recipe for
developing success at BSC was as impressive as her stellar playing career. Her coaching philosophy
involves everything from on-court success to intellectual stimulation among the players.

An academician in her own right, Charland holds both a bachelor's (health promotions) and a master's
(exercise physiology) from UAB. She was a multiple Dean's List and presidential honors recipient,
listed on the Great Midwest and Conference USA honor rolls, and received the Mervyn Sterne
post-graduate scholarship in 1997.  Tonya has coached with numerous club programs throughout the
country.

Tonya and her husband, Scott an Assistant Strength Coach at Ohio State, were married in June 2001
and have a son, James, born in February 2006.
